903 GC Wien-Süßenbrunn [0]

HOT OR SMOOTH? – The speculation about the correct spelling of the golf club Süß(ss)enbrunn has always been a funny one. To be honest – it doesn’t really matter. Main thing is, that we have a fine 18 hole course directly in front of Vienna’s doorstep, and a cosy 19th Hole for the drinks lost in bets.

Currently, this golf course is undergoing a change: both, visually as well as the image is concerned. The emergence of a small, single-family housing estate near the first fairway is losing space there, but brings it back on the 12th hole. To be precise: Hole 1 is shortened to a par 4, hole 12 is extended to a par 5. This is to ensure that everything remains the same in terms of spacing standards. But that’s all regarding “old fashioned” standards.

In order to combine in- and outward beauty, a large amount of measurements are being invested to enhance the area. Almost 300 new trees were planted and in the course of alterations on Hole 1 to 12 some peccadillos of youth were also changed on the fly. Some tees were straightened, some were increased in size, some holes were lengthened, several bunkers were enlarged, waste-areas were cultured and a lot more done to design the course more attractive. You realise certain similarities to St. Andrews.

Also hole 18, a sore point, because of the houses to the right of the fairway and the large urge of golfers to hit a slice ball, was significantly changed: The tee is now 30 meters further to the left, closer to the driving range, which is now more accurately separated from the 18th fairway than before by some of the earlier mentioned 300 trees. This guarantees, that no more next door living tenants will be in the firing line of golfers.

But the biggest changes have been made to the fairways of hole 12 and 1: Hole 12 having been a difficult long Par 4, with a slide bend to the left in its days, has now developed to a Par 5 with mirror inverted bend. The tee was transferred to the rear and now stands just behind the 11th Green. And  holes 1 is not anymore a very straight Par 5, but changed into a medium length Par 4. That it had ever come to these measures was due to an incorrect measurement of the golf course, which has, during construction, occupied a part of land space, which by law did not belong to the course.
