421 GC Stärk-Linz-Ansfelden [0]

Golf course with thoughtfulness – Gerhard Stärk is not an unknown person. As master builder he has built more than 25 golf courses. Since 1990 he has owned a golf course himself.

The 9-hole-facility in Linz-Pichling is not just there for the members, but also a pilot plant for any development as far as golf course building is concerned. In autumn 2000 Stärk could show a second role model facility, really mature with 18 holes and situated in Linz-Ansfelden close to Pichling. It was the target to realise this project in the best ecological way possible: Gerhard Stärk talks about a kind of construction, which is close to nature and down to earth. Close to nature means that the existing landscape was allowed to win over the design of the fairways. The mechanical diggers were almost solely used for the design of the green landscapes. Down to earth means that, for the first time, a kind of construction with special drainage system was used for the Greens, which normally is used for a different kind of sport lawn, Stärk’s commissioner Günter Rumpl explains. Generally the whole Green is built on grit. Thus seeping water is quickly drained. During dry weather periods, this is a disadvantage not only because of the high water usage. Essential nutrients are drained and need to be brought back permanently by fertilizers. This is why Stärk now uses just thin water slots instead of a gravel aggregate bed for drainage. Seeping water is drained as quickly, but the soil doesn’t dry out, because the part of gravel is just 5 percent. The grass develops strong, deep roots and they are healthier, more resistant and more resilient. These Greens, so Rumpl, are in line with nature. There are no disadvantages during heavy rain, so Rumpl says, but decisive advantages during ongoing care and long lasting dry periods: Both facts could be reproduced in the strange weather this year. Interesting as well is the method of Stärk to absorb the left-over’s of the drained fertilizer from the Greens: They are lead into sealed troughs over drainages and there in biotopes broken down biologically. Stärk already at the first presentation: “This kind of construction saves me 40% of the normal costs. No way, you can do it any “greener”.”

And how about playing on it?

The course is not too difficult on purpose, manager Sonja Stärk, daughter of Gerhard Stärk says: You should not trouble yourself playing your handicap in Ansfelden. The round starts off with 380/457 metres long Par 5, which leads uphill the Local Mountain of the club (no worries – the difference of height is just 40 metres) and a short Par 4 (262/331 metres). Down it goes a flat slope twice up and down. Here is lots of space for mistakes, even though the Greens, defended by bunkers and biotopes, are not always easy to hit. The first highlight is hole number 7, a downhill Par 3, where you can see the new (left) and old (right) broadcasting facility from the tee. Very well designed is as well the eighth hole (Par 4, 284/345 metres), which uses a creek and a group of trees as defence of the Green. After hole 9, a Par 3 alongside the range to the direction of the club house, a second time you have to climb the Local Mountain (hole number 10) and after the 11th hole, a short Par 4 (257/321 metres) the longest fairway of the course follows. This downhill 430/513 metres long Par 5 crosses an artificial area of rocks – the “steinerne Meer”. A tight Par 4 and a well protected Par 3 later, the next piece of treasure follows: The 15th hole (Par 5, 424/505 metres), a downhill-uphill dogleg, located as left-waltz. A short Par 4 and a Par 3, located at the edge of a forest later then the final hole: 457 metres from the back tees (for women maximum 367 metres) are not really short for a Par 4 even while going downhill the Local Mountain.
