416 GC Sonnberg-Kobernausserwald [0]

SECOND LIFE – Reinhard Enghuber used to own a printing company and a problem: He was golfer in Kobernausserwald and not happy at all with the course.

So he sold his company, took over the club in 2003, which was in financial and economic crisis after insolvency, and started to put life into it again. An overall very design-radical operation: 13 of the 18 tees were reconstructed; two fairways were closed and replaced by two new holes (first and eighteenth hole). Thus the course was extended by about 550 metres and presents itself now as Par 70 (instead of Par 69). Enghuber and his team made further changes in the infrastructure: The club house and the garden were refurbished, a parking lot was built and the driving range was modernised. Enghuber doesn’t tell us the costs apart from thousands of working hours. But: without the help of the own team, the new Kobernausserwald would have been impossible to create. (Before the reconstruction of the club, Enghuber asked 2 golf architects for their opinion; but when they presented their bills – each between 1 and 1.5 million Euro, he said thank you very much and good bye.)

SonnbergNEU4At the end of the construction works, Kobernausserwald presents itself finally as “real golf course”. (Enghuber) Most of all those people, who know Kobernausserwald before, are so astonished, Englhuber says happily: “Nowadays, after having played a green fee round, they leave with a good feeling – and return.” The increase in members – since Enghuber took over the club, there have been 160 new members – proves the new manager right, when he talks about Kobernausserwald as a club for “normal” people: a place to feel well, a familiar-comfortable atmosphere and a attractive price-performance ratio. Enghuber doesn’t ask for an enrolment fee, but it was still hard to acquire new members, because big cities are missing in that area. But, as mentioned before: If someone says YES, he will stay – maybe because he can feel that Enghuber cares about his people: “I watch closely what people talk and want.”

Einhuber is also active in regards to golf tourism. The spa Gainberg with its hotel is the same way a partner company as the Hotel Danzer in Aspach and the restaurant of the club caterer Gerhard Kaufmann (just try his “Wiener Schnitzel”, Enghuber’s favourite food) in Mettmach. P.S.: It is not a business as far as money is concerned, that Enghuber is managing director of the GC Kobernausserwald, but it has a positive effect: Enghuber’s handicap is as low as ever before (9,7). And if he can get rid of his mistakes at the short play, then he will turn out to be club master as well.
