WATER MARCH! – Gerry Jekl, manager of the GC Donau Linz-Feldkirchen, knows exactly how to play media’s piano well.

And so, thanks to tireless machinations of Jekl, the refurbished course has been constantly in the spotlight of newspapers, magazines, radio and television since its reopening in August. Until then, however, even manager Jekl and the president of the golf club, Christoph Schilchegger had to tackle, where it was possible. Together with the Green keeper team of twenty they had to shovel, dredge and put on their hands everywhere, where it was needed to in order to be back on time-track. Jekl: „This dedication was one reason why we have kept the members in this tough year without a course and they haven’t migrated to other clubs.“ Then, finally: On August, 15th 2003 the fully refurbished facility was taken back into operation with a “flood charity tournament” (what else?). With a world record attempt for the Guinness Book of Records: 219 golfers take their swings at the same time at the circular Golfodrome of the academy.

Higher standard
FeldkirchenNEU3What is new to the course? The most important thing: Almost all tee boxes and Greens were elevated by one to one and a half metres. Jekl: “So we are save at the next flood.” Understandably the whole reconstruction had this aspect: Additional to the elevation of the fairways and Greens, enormous drainages were laid, collecting tanks were dug and ditches between the ponds were built to avoid giving any chance to future floods. The newly built collection tanks were partly integrated into the course (a nice water hazard at the ninth hole), partly you can discover these dusty refuges at the moment, because they were hidden at places, which you just reach when playing extraordinarily bad.

The spoil of these works was straight away used for the mentioned elevation of the tees and Greens. Irony of fate: exactly that ditch, which damaged the course most, is dried out this year due to summer heat. In addition to the flood prevention there were several cosmetic changes at the bunkers, which are now visible from the tee and therefore recognisable as danger spot. Jekl: This makes the fairways fairer. On top of it, we have added some bunkers. At the eighth hole, the newly built hazards should stop players of aiming the ball from the tee too far to the right and degrading this dogleg Par 5 to a mediocre Par 4. In the landing zone six additional bunkers and a water hazard now lurk.” The 9-hole academy course too was smartened up in the run of the “disaster operation championship course” and extended as well.

The existing six holes were topped with another three, and the new 9 hole course was straight away rated. Jekl: “With that, we now have a fully equipped 9 hole course, where we can hold special tournaments for beginners.” In addition to the update of the course there is another massive plus as far as infrastructure is concerned: With Schloss Mühldorf (www.schlossmuehldorf.at) the GC Linz-Feldkirchen owns the most beautiful hotel at a course. This 4-star piece of treasure thrones directly at the ninth tee, which was redesigned by Christina and Stefan Würmer with professional touch to a designer-hotel. 26 rooms and suites invite for relaxation at the golf course.
