CORNER TO CUDDLE – In the north-western corner, where the Mühlviertel meets with Bavaria and Czech, we find an ideal cleaner of our daily stress and sorrows.

A weak hour by car away from Linz, how I realised this Friday evening, comfortable for a journey into the weekend. The agony of choice as far as accommodation is concerned: 24 partner hotels are to be found on the club’s homepage. It is no coincidence, so my companion, in regards to my choice of the beer inn in Aigen (just 40 Euro for bed & breakfast). But I say: Where there is good beer, especially the sorts of the brewery Schlägl, there have to live good people. That is why you should ignore the strangely cool architecture of the rooms. Anyway: As far as food and drinks is concerned, the golf guest is at its best here. In the club restaurant, for example, Johannes Leyerseder is cooking at highest level, how I could persuade myself the next day, and even the choice of wine almost banishes my taste of beer.

Are 27 holes enough?
BoehmerwaldNEU2On Saturday morning we go the last 10 kilometres from Aigen to the golf course in Ulrichsberg, address is Seitelschlag 50 (beer again?). Whole hearted welcome then off we go to the driving range. My darling prefers to work on the 9-hole course. That one is ideal for players with higher handicap, because the fairways are not too long and the feeling of success is higher. As far as caring is concerned, the small course is just as good as the big one, which is attend to together with a club member (reduces my Green fee by 20%!!).
My partner takes me by the hand although it isn’t necessary: Comfortably wide fairways at the first and second hole make the start easy. Straight after it, it becomes more difficult: At hole number 3, a Par 3, the pond to the left of the Green takes gratefully my pulled tee off – gluck and its gone. After number 4 and 5 (two left doglegs, which are not that good for me as a slicer) the first summary: Well taken care of fairways, not very difficult bunkers (they are mainly used for aiming), medium fast Greens, which breaks are rather easy to read. Moritz Mayrhauser, sportive figurehead of the club, summarizes it that way: “In order to play handicap, a good tactic at the holes is necessary.” Alright then.

Two for one
The second half of the 18-hole course is more exciting. The tenth hole already shows it: From the white tee 400 metres long (from the closest women’s tee still 338 metres), this Par 4 rather plays as a Par 5: The out of bounds to the right lames the drive from the tee in a strong way. Hole number 11 dashes down to the valley like a kamikaze (what makes a Par four and a half out of the Par 5) and is very tight there.
Similar to it is hole number 13 (Par 4, 321 to 362 metres): Here, too, the descent helps at the tee. The frontal water hazard in front of the Green lies so nastily, that a cowardly placed hit pays off: Rather a safe Par 5 than a wet Bogey. My partner promises a beautiful finish with the holes 17 & 18: And he is right. A Par 5 with water hazards to the side is followed on the left hand side by a Par 4 dogleg with bunkers in the driving zone – both fairways slightly uphill to the direction of my darling, who is waiting at the 18th Green, waving with her score card. “37 points!” she excitedly says. I am not excited, but I still have half a golfing weekend ahead of me and one or another beer against thirst.
