404 GC Am Mondsee [0]

SURGERY SUCCESSFUL – The scenery on the shore of Lake Mondsee, with the massive rocks of the Dragon Wall as a backdrop, has always been a reason to come back again.

And, by Max Graf Lamberg end of the 80s designed course of the GC Am Mondsee, with its four furious final holes – nothing for water-shy! – is another. But Lambergs creation was a bit showing its age: Not only Thomas Reiter, Captain of the Mondsee squad and multiple national champion, thought like that.

Although the course was playfully tricky, but not so high as he could have been as far as golf is concerned, Reiter criticises the weak point “tees”. On top of it, there was the lack of length: Only two of the four Par-5 holes (7/18) had been real Par 5, and on the Par 3 and Par 4 lanes experts don’t need more than a long iron to hit the Green (as a first or second shot). Finally, the position of the fairway and green bunker has also become obsolete due to the improved materials in recent years. Class player Reiter (Handicap 1.5) is clearly not an indicator of the general golf community: If he calls the old hole number 4 (384 metres old, 403 metres new)a short hole, the average golfer just burst into tears. Nevertheless, Reiter hits the nail on the head. The ambition of the person responsible for the conversion whose ideas were implemented by Lamberg, was; making the GC Am Mondsee crisp again in order to be able to bid again for international events.

New tees
Mondsee new (left unchanged, only the fairways 8/10/14/17) states in general: Prolonged fairways (2/3/4/6 /12/15, from autumn 9 as well) make the course a challenge again from the back tees. Some newly built tees, just like never before. Strongly positioned fairway bunkers by shaping (upward drawn, edge close to the Green) from the tee made more visible and hence optical barriers. Many changes in Greens were made (new construction of the first, generous conversion of the second Green, reshaping the landscape of the Greens at the holes 3/4/5/6/7/11/12). Let’s go into detail: Many golfers at GC Am Mondsee had been afraid of hole one, which small Green was hiding in a forest clearing. After the conversion the forest entrance is wider and the lush and saddle Green now easier to take. (That the putting thus has not become easier stands on a different scorecard.) At the second hole, the fairway bunker is now clearly visible, which is irritating more to aggressive than high handicap players. Last mentioned players praise the considerably enlarged Green, which was drawn to the back.

Knee with bunker
The sixth hole became a rare beauty – the prominent right dogleg. Set back tees and newly planted bunkers at the knee cap respectively back of the knee complicate short cuts or placing of the drive. Also tricky is to hit the Green, thanks to new slopes to the right and the existing, closed down to the Green, pond. Water hazard also complicates the seventh hole – the green is now a peninsula – while the Drachensee at hole number nine after the extension (528 metres, the necessary tee will be built in autumn at the banks) still shamelessly interferes: The crescent-shaped fairway, which is located in a right angle at the banks, is thanks to the changed angle of the drive now rather a Par 5, although experts like Reiter ideally just need a driver/wood for it.

Golf Club Am Mondsee Pro AmEven more exciting became holes Eleven and Twelve (shaped fairway bunkers, beautiful hills around the green), on the thirteen, only the two fairway bunkers, left and right, were emphatically designed. The Fifteen, had so far been a signature hole, still got more spectacular: The champion tee of this Par 3, which is fully played over a water hazard, now stands on an artificially built stone wall. The Sixteen, the tunnel-tight left-turned dogleg hose between birch trees and water hazard, has been widened slightly. Champions, however, must now play off the farthest tee and therefore have a lot of troubles ahead of them.

Be aware of hole eighteen
The 18th hole only experienced cosmetic changes, but with considerable impact: the existing, previously unused Champion tee was reactivated, which makes this final hole, due to a different angle from tee towards fairway, a fulminate “killer hole” (quotation Reiter). The Green is so hardly ever to reach in two shots – unless you have enough adrenaline fuelled and need to take your last chance during match play.  Thomas Reiter’s résumé of Mondsee new matches also our point of view: surgery successful, patient lives, visitors are enthusiastic. Reiter’s only downside to it: His 66, with which he held the course record at the old course, will not be repeated so easily.
