713 GC Eichenheim [0]

MASTERPIECE OF DESIGN – The belated start was in summer 2000. Long winters and bad weather were the origins of the delay.

But the waiting was well worth it: US architect Kyle Phillips has discovered fairways and Greens, where anybody else would just have found mushrooms and drops of sweat. In addition to the subtle line management – we didn’t find any hole that wasn’t worth looking at, honestly – there is fantastic scenery out of a folk film including rocks & forest & snow & sky.

EichenheimNEU4However, we need to give time to this course, it needs, like all young courses at least two years to grow, before we can judge the standard of quality. Swings that you will need: precise work from the tee is mandatory, a lot of forest and nature lurks from the fairway edges. As far as the irons are concerned, here is our hint: Don’t forget your birdie-book! Because: The distances are, due to the moving fairways and wild sceneries not easy to read. How many breaks and nasty turns there are on the Greens we will only be able to find out in the run of years. The final hole (Par 4, 355 to 430 metres) is, from the back tees, one of the most difficult Par 4 in Austria. It leads, as slight right dogleg, slightly downhill and from the knee slightly uphill again towards a bunker-defended Green. The hit onto the Green has to pass a wide creek ditch. It is no shame to play the 18th hole as a Par 5. Also hole number 2 (Par 4, 305 to 485 metres) with its downhill tee off plus facing slope is nothing for short playing golfers. And, and, and…

Best chance for birdie: we decide, lengthwise, for hole 16 (Par 3, 95 to 135 metres), although the Green is located in a blind spot on the first floor. Also hole 15 (Par 4, 260 to 360 metres) has something special: If you place the tee hit correctly, the fairway helps with run. The Green is one of the easier ones in Eichenheim. The driving range is situated at the access road and only a short foot march away from the club house. It is also sufficient, but emotionally handicapped due to the closeness to the road. The club house, with its consequence and logistic is unique in Austria and even with its castle like size not uncomfortable. It owns an elegant bar/restaurant area, meeting room with starry sky and a inviting sun terrace. Ideally, the golfer parks his car inside the garage (underneath the club house), walks through the big Pro-shop towards the welcome desk and then straight onto the course.
