A FAMILY SAGA – In 1989 Leonhard Astl, owner of the restaurant Moarwirt, decided to build a small pitch and putt course on his meadows in Walchsee.

WalchseeNEU1When golfers were starting to grow out of this course, mainly Astl’s son Leo jun., who joined the golf-HAK in Stegersbach and plays for the national team by now, trained farmer Astl began in 1996 to extend the course. Greens and fairways have been mown natural grass lanes, constructional effort did not exist. The ÖGV gave permission and the hobby club turned into a real club (in the meantime there are 450 members, celebrities like Konstantin Wecker included) which is lead by Astl and his wife Sigrid.

Soon after that, troubles start to raise, caused by further extension plans from Astl and the closeness of the course to the conservation area Schwemm. The WWF said no and Astl fought his way against the environmentalists through all instances. In 2000 the course was officially closed; because you need a special permission to land mow a large area, the high court said. But if a person from the Tyrol wants something, especially when he is right – the Schwemm was untouched by the golfers, which was also proved by expertises – his head could turn into a bullhead. Astl fought for his project – against government, judges, the WWF – and this fight almost ruined him. Only 3 Mio Schillings later (that’s what all the court costs were) Astl got it all in writing in May, 2001: Golf and ecology are no contradiction at Walchsee.

Manual sorting of frogs
WalchseeNEU2In May 2001 Astl started with the extension the way it is now: Nine fairways in unexciting design with all edges and corners from the original landscape and no marks of excavation machinery against it – and under permanent observation of the environmentalists: This is why there is a permanent counting of frogs at Moarhof, done manually by the green keepers.

But nothing can stop Astl now. When, in 1998 almost his whole restaurant burnt down, he rebuilt it as a hotel and put everything on golf – even before he got all permissions. The main arguments pro golf at Moarhof are on one side the easy going atmosphere within the club – on the other side the quiet area, cheap tariffs, golf school and the nice restaurant with fantastic cuisine. And because everybody realises now, that golf and Schwemm go together well, Astl is starting to dream about an extension of another 18 holes already. The first draft is already submitted and the long way of instances is well known to Astl. He has been there and done that many times before.
