625 GC Traminergolf [0]

Time of thinking is over – With the grand opening of the GC Traminergolf Klöch in August, Styria gets its 25th golf course. The good fundament lets people forget about one or another constructional sin.

Ideal golf landscape at the southern border of the land of vulcanos

It’s done: Klöch finally has its golf course. The community of Traminer at the southern border of the styrian land of volcano, close to the Slovenian border, bets on gentle tourism. Enjoyment tourism with lots of landscape, peace and lucullan specialities; adding the infrastructure of spas and hotels of the nearby Bad Radkersburg to it as well as the long season and the rare golfing possibility – all of these are good points for a course. Some prosperous facilities have started with much less than that. This fact was realised by some golf-mad farmers over ten years ago and a tricky routing was designed together with established golf course architects, the plans made real and the first mechanical diggers started their work. Then, an argument about the water and its draining started with activists. The prosperous project fell back to sleep then. The show-stopper – how much fluid can be taken by the soil and do you need a complete new sandy construction of the fairways – stays unanswered. After this project has been sleeping in its dorm, in 2005 the elected party of the community took it on. It is much easier when you have political background and so, after 18 months of construction time, this late bloomer took off. From the golf course you are just a jump away from the Traminer vineyards – for example at the fifteenth hole, a double dogleg which crosses the Klausenbach three times.

This finally realised 65 acres facility differs at some key points from the original plan and focuses on small investment costs. In regards to the water they obviously hope for natural conditions. After the young meadow has easily popped the extremely wet first half of the year, the concept seems to work out. But they will still have to reconstruct the original bunkering and other spaces on the course as time goes by. The Greens and the edges of the bunkers seem too hard, the way they cut it seem too immature – completely normal for a young course. Most important: The fairways are stretched and playable. Even Rome wasn’t built in a day. On top of it, the course scores with its landscape – the Styrian Toskana.

The routing differs from the original plans in regards to the finishing holes.

The fairways wind along side the nicely running Klausenbaches, which often takes part in the game – either as side-line border or as up-front water hazard. Embedded in the last back of the styrian Hügelland the routing over and over again leads to elevated places and opens views to the southern Murtal just until Slovenia. The first nine holes lie quietly and relaxed relatively flat at the pasture, while the second nine, towards the village, show well used differences in height. There is a fantastic view from the club house: From elevated space you overview most of the fairways and the beautiful landscape.

Head-Pro Eddie Cooper owns an outlet of the well known Modern Golf Academy – further schools are: Freiberg, Graz, Reiting – and he is the boss over a rich range with a 4-hole short play course with great panorama. Although the course just opened, there are more than 100 members inscribed, so far, seems like a good sign.
