Stories from Freiberg – If fairways could talk, in some of the golf courses you could hear a lot of unenthusiastic talking: left and right, up and down – man, how boring!

alt

Whose fault is this boredom? – Most of the time it is down to the designer, who didn’t think of anything special. But more often it is down to that person, who chose the area for the course. A big belated thank you to the people around foundation president Hermann Nöhrer, who were walking the slopes and meadows around the Castle of Freiberg 15 years ago and decided: Yes, suitable for 9 holes.

25JahreFreibergLogoEven after the extension to 18 holes (from 1999) nothing changed in the astonishing vary of the club close to Gleisdorf, which makes it a fantastic target mainly for tournament and Green fee players. As mentioned: It is a shame, that the holes haven’t been given names. Thinking of courses in England or Scotland, where you instantly know the holes because they were given names like Railway, the Alps or Sahara – you could easily find names for some fairways in Freiberg – maybe even in styrian dialect: first hole, gmahte Wiesn (mown meadow), because it is a comfortably short Par 5 to warm up a little bit. Second hole, Kulm, dedicated to the ski jump, because this Par 3 directly leads to the valley. Third hole, Aiming water: These four ponds, accompanying the fairway to the right hand side, are quite dangerous. Fourth hole, nothing to see – a Par 4 with a blind tee-off. Fifth hole – attention – is a short Par 3, which, never the less, has to be played with caution. On to the sixth hole – tough – because it is the longest Par 5 with 470 to 557 metres. Hole number seven is called Schöckl, because the Grazer house mountain looks over your shoulder at the tee-off. The eighth hole, goat leg, describes a right dogleg lying on a slope and the ninth hole (pancake) refers to the flat Green of this Par 3. Do you like that? If yes: we continue with the tenth hole, ravine, a thin downhill Par 3 guiding to a rather small Green at a water hazard. (If you get a different taste from the smells of the newly refurbished restaurant on your way to the tenth hole – don’t worry, they serve food until the closing of fairways.)

We continue with the fairways 11 (suggestion is “hang in there”, because it is long and designed very strategically), 12 (stay dry, short left dogleg alongside a creek), 13 (don’t be scared – brave golfers make a short cut at the 2nd swing across the out of bounds to the left at this Par 5) and 14 (sandpit, a tough, long Par 3 across water hazard and bunker). The 15th hole (upwards, because the left dogleg leads slightly up the slope) and 16 (around the bend, a tricky left dogleg around a rough zone) are a taste just before the seventeenth hole (bye, bye ball, a short but difficult Par 4 with a small Green behind the pond). At the eighteenth hole (dungeon) underneath the castle, the fairway which is hanging to the left, is hard to hit and the Green as well is very small. A final glance on the score card shows two questions: Should you have practised more intense at the beautiful driving range or the big putting Green? Or is it enough to relax a bit longer at the club house with a shandy and a snack? The decision is up to you.
