603 GC Ennstal-Weissenbach [0]

Embankment close to the Enns – The planned nine fairways were tight and short, and they didn’t really know how to fight the mosquitoes as per yet.

The paper model, however, which was presented by the foundation president of the golf and land course Weißenbach, KR Gert Aigner, in 1977 at the ÖGV membership day, was designed whole-heartedly into the smallest detail: There was even a sailing boat on the pond of the course.

Golf in Weißenbach close to Liezen started already years before that in Pichlarn, where Aigner was one of the initiators. He was looking for something unique – and after the unsuccessful golf course project in Bad Mitterndorf in 1976 – a group under the leadership of Gert Aigner founded the GLC Ennstal in 1977. In the beginning, this “new” project did also not stand on solid ground: There seemed to be no space for two courses due to the lack of tourism in that region. (In the whole of Styria there existed only 600 golfers and only one more facility called Murhof back then) But Aigner was persistent so were the potential members, and in August 1978 the former very small 9-hole course was opened with celebrities like Heinrich Harrer and Toni Sailer. The rest is a success story, but an edgy one. Every year they had to work on the spring flood and its consequences. One possibility of solution is documented as image in the club annuals. Golfers with rolled up trousers legs work on the course barefooted. And if there was once in a while less rain, the green activists stepped in: If W.A. Mozart knew of the Weißenbacher problems with a “phantom-bird” called Wachtelkönig back then already, Papageno would have gotten a different libretto (and definitely not such a funny music). Weißenbach grew in a lot of steps of construction: In the run of the years they extended from 9 to 16 holes (the Wachtelkönig, who was rarely seen by anyone bred on the two missing holes), then, for a short time there were 18 holes (where the legalisation was missing). The G&LC fell back to 16 holes for a short amount of time until in autumn 2006 the completed 18-hole facility could be opened finally.

The spirit of Weissenbach

Golfers move more or less on original grounds only at the fairways 1/7/8/9, of which the spirit of Weißenbach can be felt best at the holes seven and eight. The most famous hole Ness, former a Par 3 across a frontal water hazard, was only born in 1984. It has partly survived the reconstruction works: The Green (now belonging to the fifth hole) is now being played from a different direction, which takes away the grimness of the pond. (In exchange you can see now the mountain Grimming like a postcard view ahead of you.) What is it, that club manager Thomas Aigner, son of the already deceased Gert Aigner, remembers most of the course, he knows since being a child? “Today you would call it a “compact course”. Not one hole was longer than 250 metres.”
