THEY ARE NOT CRAZY AT ALL – Directly underneath the seventh fairway, Austria’s first Par 6, is a former roman village situated, which gives its name to the course.

(from GR 6/2005)

A decision from the federal monuments office from November, 28th 2002 says that this location is no coincident: “The type site, situated in medium height provides a fantastic view… and shows the characteristics of roman villas, their location in wonderful landscape, in a generic way.” At the moment, though, nobody is thinking of a dig of these roman cultural monuments.

The course itself is extended to 27 holes – we are going to give you an update very soon. Sports grounds builder Hans Holzleitner, who implemented more than 25 golfing facilities and who is working on the construction of the GC Adamstal at the moment, started off, directly in front of his company’s location with a 9-hole course in 2003 A.D. (Römergolf I). Since July 2004 it has established itself as a beginner-friendly course. The big practising facilities with roofed driving range, chipping and putting Greens, two Green and fairway bunkers as well as tees with weather resistant mats and even practise possibilities for slopes excite even advanced players.

Par 6 for gladiators
RoemergolfNEU5Since August you have been able to play on the first ten holes of the facility “Römergolf II”, which should be extended to 18 holes by 2007. Big brother is entertaining with some specials worth seeing and playing. On top of all of course the already mentioned Par 6, which doesn’t seem to end at all (like the landscape itself) with its 672 metres. Straight after the tee, a small pond is waiting, which is rather catching your eyes than the balls. With a perfectly hit drive slightly uphill, you reach the back of the knee of the left dogleg.

There is danger, though, if you try to short cut: Out of bounds as well as a equally dangerous rough are waiting to the left of the fairway! From now on, the course continues slightly downhill and this is why the next swing debauches you to attack. But be aware: Especially at the landing area, the fairway tightens extremely when hit with a fairway wood club, length without accuracy will lead directly out of bounds. As a treat, the third hit is relatively harmless – but only for those players, who don’t attack or don’t have the ability to – because the Green is still more than 200 metres away, defended by a pond to the right and invisible on top of it. It is just the church tower in the background that leads you to the right direction.

Alea (non) iacta sunt
The die is cast – at least for the first 10 holes. And as nice and easy the 9-hole course presents itself, the wild (romantic) the arena “Römergolf II”: Especially impressive are the holes number two – here it leads steep down directly into a forest aisle, followed by a sharp right hand side dogleg – and (obviously, because the tee ist directly in front of the house of the builder!) number four, a 161 to 185 metres long Par 3 across a small pond with incredible view over the Tennengebirge, Gaisberg and Watzmann. The die is cast not just yet – or in other words: “A golf course is never completely finished, really, never mind when you open it!” Roland Geringer, Manager of GC Römergolf says.

Geringer has been working in golf business since 1993 and is not just trained in “golfer’s latin” but also in St. Andrews rules. He loves to explain, what is there still to happen at Eugendorf, for example the planting of 200 trees still this autumn and at some point the extension of the fairways to back tees (white). The opening of the ten new holes already whets the appetite for more and is really a success. Every detail shows ecological and golf foresight, which is proven by the decision of the Office Salzburg-Umgebung from June, 22nd 2005: “The golf course was designed in a role model way […] In the protection of nature’s point of view this golf course really is a success.” Golfituri te salutant: The golf congregated greet!
