508 GC Lungau [0]

LARGE GREENS, BIG GOLF – A little bit „wall-flower“like the nice 18 plus 9-hole course at GC Lungau/St. Michael lives its life – unjustified, as we think, because the course has developed to more than just an insider’s tip during the last few years.

The criteria of the roughly 6000 metres long course from the back tees that has seen many competitions are mainly the Greens, which are always in good state. John Graimann, working as Head-Pro for more than 10 years, knows exactly what is important at “his” meadow: “The Greens are really big, but not too strongly undulated. This, in combination, results in a lot of space for tricky pin-positions. On top of that, the Greens are rather hard, which makes the hitting of the Green a little bit “left-like” meaning to roll the ball onto it rather than spinning it.”

LungauNEU3That brings us in the middle of the topic, which is: GC Lungau/St. Michael makes us deepening our relation to the driver again – out of the confinement in a darkened cell with the wood club 1, because the course nicely hides some unplanned curves – mostly, because the Green keeper take well care of keeping the rough in the background. Graimann: “This makes our course so much fun and loved by our golf tourists, which are an important asset to this region.” Who ever is expecting an easy life now and thinks of playing his best round in a lifetime, still needs enough good golf play in his bag, which can be seen already at the first hole: This gentle dogleg is not easy to play due to the big bunkering – needless to say that it is one of the hardest to play holes on the course. Graimann: “After that, the situation relaxes a bit and you get the chance to score well during the next three holes, to talk in stable ford-jargon.”

Lungau and the Amancorner
At the ninth hole – the most beautiful hole, as far as Graimann is concerned – you get prepared on what will follow on the back-nine: Water! Graimann: “Long hitter can try to hit to the right of the dominating spruce. Who ever can’t make it should already prepare for the oncoming bogey. Anyway, I recommend to mid and high handicap players to see this hole as a short Par 5 and leave the pond to the left.” A touch of Amen Corner is expecting us at the holes 10 to 12, where the river Mur permanently takes part of the game. Graimann: “The 10th hole is our “ball-graveyard” so to speak, nowhere else on the course get more balls lost than here.”

Back across the river Mur it leads at the twelfth hole, the end of the Amen Corner in Lungau, where you need to have tactical calculus. “It is not necessary to use anything else but a long iron club from the tee for this just over 300 metres long Par 4. More importantly you have to place the ball on the left hand side of the fairway to see the Green for the second swing”, Graimann points the direction. His way of course management is as follows: How do you use your good hits even better? What sounds easy is effective at the end. Finally, we meet a good old friend – the pond from the ninth hole – which also plays the ball-eater for the final Par 5.
Graimann’s hint: Keep your direction to the left of the fairway towards the Green; this way, at least you take the water hazard out of the equation. And because it didn’t work out the way I wanted, this time, I continue to play a practice round on the nine-hole course. It definitely helps to work on the play with the iron clubs.
