GOLF COURSE WITH A VIEW – The Nordic ski world championship is guesting in Seefeld and with it the ÖSV-Grand Franz Schellhorn as judge at the ski jump.

The trained butcher notices everywhere the signs for the direction of the golf course in the winter wonderland Seefeld and he takes notes. After the championship, he tells this idea the hoteliers of his home village Goldegg, whose hotels were half empty during the summer. Schellhorn: “Actually since the county exhibition in 1981. Time was ready for something new.”

GoldeggNEU1Out of the idea, a plan develops, which was interfered by the financial problems of the course in Altentann: The bank all of a sudden talks about private accountability, you never know, look at Altentann. The idea including plan almost fails; one potential shareholder after the other cancels. But in the end Franz Schellhorn and the German Flick asset consultant Eberhardt von Brauchitsch (yes, he is the nephew of the famous German car racer) have the guts to start the project “9 holes for Goldegg”. Schellhorn: “Nine million Schilling these nine holes cost us in those days and Brauchitsch and me, we took the private accountability. Designed was the course by the Dutchman Dudok van Heel.”

The rest is quickly narrated: Extension to 18 fairways in the year 1994, again designed by van Heel. One year later, the club house was finally built, and Goldegg started to struggle. Schellhorn: “Not, because we ran down the course, but because the surrounding clubs suddenly lowered their enrolment fees. That was when the club was at the edge.” But at the end Schellhorn may lean back: It all went well, nothing happened! Goldegg new! After these economically hard times Franz Schellhorn has time again to take care of the course.

GoldeggNEU4He is not happy about the newly introduced course rating in 2002, which rates the GC in Goldegg as extremely easy. Schellhorn: “This was our only disadvantage, because as far as landscape is concerned, it is one of the most beautiful in Austria. Now it was time to find space for a practicable update of the course. Thanks to the raise of the golf sport the farmers weren’t that sceptical anymore like 20 years ago, when they just made short dated contracts, because they didn’t know anything about golf and only waited for us to get bankrupt.” That is why 14 more acres of land were loaned to the existing 62 acres last year. Reasonably a pupil of Dudok van Heel (former German national team golfer Thomas Himmel) planned the new four holes, three Par 4 holes and one Par 5, which have replaced the four Par 3 holes since September 2004.

Therefore the course had to be turned around for the x-th time and the holes newly assorted. For everybody who knows Goldegg: The first and second hole are new fairways, the former first hole is from now on number 4, the old fairways 5, 7 and 16 don’t exist anymore. The former ninth hole represents the tenth hole from now (spectacular downhill Par 4) and hole number 17 is a sophisticated Par 5. Roger? Schellhorn: “Now we reached the point, where we always wanted to be and have a sportive course, which stays most golfers in mind also because of its fantastic panorama.” What stays in mind as well: At this golf course, many sportsmen visit, from Ralf Schuhmacher until Stephan Eberharter – also a credit to Franz Schellhorn, who knows very well how to use his contacts in regards to best marketing of “his” golf course.
