IT IS FUN TO SWING – Do you know the old course in Gastein? Its nine holes (after the opening of the new nine holes, they are played as holes 10 to 18) are not really narrow.

The compact arrangement lets our swings always become a bit numb, so did some special holes. For example hole number 3 (now number 12), a Par 3, which ducks into the shadows of a slope with its Green lying over the level of the fairway. Number 5 (now number 15) with a nasty tee-shot, which height lets the fairway seem cross-country ski track-like tight. As well number 7 (now number 16) a rather short Par 5 with tube-like tee-box, which lets claustrophobic golfers throttle their club grips. Who didn’t get into play within the first round, can’t make it most of the time at the second one: You leave Gastein with a bad taste in your mouth, which doesn’t come from radon-rich water.

GasteinNEU5As per now, the round in Gastein starts with the new nine holes: wide tee-boxes, wide fairways, generous Greens with gentle breaks – whoever warmed up at these boulevards (concept Keith Preston & Hein Zopf), is not afraid of the second, compact half anymore. The hazards of the new half, situated in the village part Remsach, are all together on the fair side: Flat bunkers, not too close to the Greens; Greens with several plateaus, but gentle breaks. Roughs and biotopes just start, where only wildest slicers/hookers play. Just one tiny little thing Preston & Zopf implemented: the seventh hole (Par 5) with its blind Green. The shorter you hit, the blinder the Green goes (unfortunately).

GasteinNEU3By the way: The very first hole is hidden on the Scorecard. For that, we only need our legs and no club: The way to the first tee is a long Par 5 (passing the stables, where you take a deep breath of horse), because no where else the area for the course were available. For the way back, the club organised a shuttle bus, which transports the golfers from the ninth Green to the tenth tee. The managing shareholder of the club, Gerhard Michel, is very content with Gastein New: The one million of Euro is well invested, because the whole valley invests into tourism. The extension plus a new portfolio of partner hotels (14 hotels for three to five stars, one of them being the hotel “Europäischer Hof” directly at the course) and a new spa centre (Opening in December) should raise the number of Green fee players from 5500 to 7500. In the medium term, so Michel, there could be even 27 holes in Gastein: In connection with the new nine holes there is enough space.

Landmark of the GC Gastein water should be in future – no worry: not as hazards. At each tee you will be able to take a sip of the fantastic, cool and refreshing water additional to that, at the sixth tee there will blubber hot thermal water. The world-famous radon-rich water of Gastein eases most of all the pain of the locomotor’s system – it is possible that golfers heal their back pains en passant at the round with it.
