THE DREAM OF A GOLF COURSE – For 16 years Karl Leither has been playing golf (handicap -12) and after his retirement the idea of building his own small golf course took hold of him. The biggest effort was to convince his wife Inge of his plan.

Guntramsdorf1

Even though she has a lot of appreciation for scenic facelifts, she did not necessarily share her husband’s enthusiasm for golf. She would have preferred a field of flowers to pick your own bouquet but by now she tastefully takes care of the aesthetic appearance of the golf course: her love of detail is noticeable not only in the neat club house but also at the pretty pond which comes into play at the most distinctive 4th and 5th holes. Should you water your ball there be assured: it rests comfortably among water plants worth about 1,000 Euros.

SMALL BUT SMART AND BEAUTIFUL
Guntramsdorf2For simply pragmatic reasons the originally intended 14.5 hectares were reduced to 9.9 hectares because no environmental impact study is necessary for projects below 10 hectares. Such a study alone would have cost 150,000 Euros. Once completed, the project will presumably have cost about 1 million Euros (excluding the landed property). Even though Leithner did a lot himself from the irrigation to the planning of details – the basic planning and routing was conceived by Armin Haderer – to the shaping. “Otherwise it would not have been possible to realize…,” says Leithner.

At first glance the 9 hole / par 29 course (one par 4 is required for a course of this size, Guntramsdorf has two) compels through its smart and well-tended appearance already in its first year: lush green fairways, well-structured strips of semi-rough and hard rough and last but not least well-playable greens. Every here and there the greens still have a few “wrinkles” but intensive greenkeeping efforts will make sure that those will have disappeared until the next year at the latest.

OVERCOMING FEARS
Karl Leither had the idea of building a golf course near Vienna where beginners have the possibility to play nine relatively easy, well-tended holes for a fairly moderate price. The membership fee is 600 € (weekday memberships Mon–Fri 12 o’clock: 450 €), the greenfee for nine holes is 20/24 € (weekdays/weekend). A covered driving range with 230 meters length offers good conditions for practice besides separate putting, chipping and pitching areas.

The concept seems to work out: “There are a lot of people who are interested in playing golf and obtain a proficiency certificate somewhere during their holidays but once back at home do not continue to play because they are scared of joining a club or simply think it is too expensive. About half of our 90 members have not played another course yet”, explains Leither, who is sitting on a bench in front of the makeshift clubhouse enjoying the evening sun and probably relaxing for the first time on this day.
