WHEN ENGLISHMAN DREAM – When Englishmen dream, pleasant things like low winds, blue skies and everlasting sunshine are included out of obvious reasons.

Gordon Nixon, born and bred in rainy Manchester, as well stared happily into space, while giving lessons in rainy England. It smelled of sun cream and Paella there. And Nixons big wish started to build up: To get self-employed in Spain, to build a golf course or take one over. And never again wear rain jackets during lessons. But fate changed its mind in regards to our Englishman. After apprenticeship and several years as teaching pro in England, fate send him for a short time to Spain, but straight after directly to Germany. There, he spent three seasons at the GC Schloss Ernegg, where he met his future wife Margit. For some time he still kept Spain in the back of his head (Nixon helped to build up Roca Viva/Capdepera in Mallorca), but then he woke up, when he heard about the planning of a golf course in Maria Taferl. Hotelier Ferdinand Schachner, owner of the “Krone”, tried for years unsuccessfully to realise this course. Nixon and his sponsors were more successful.

They got the land in sight of the pilgrimage church together (10 farmers were persuaded to sell) and DI Diethard Fahrenleitner designed the plans for a 9-hole-course. Start of construction was summer 2002. Maria Taferl fills a blind spot in the lower Austrian golf area with its position: It lies close to Melk and the motorway A1, high above the river Danube and at the corner of the Waldviertel. You are not going to discover anything extra ordinary at GC Maria Taferl, but things pleasant and down-to-earth. The club house including gastronomy is a redesigned glove factory, rather plain but functional.
The design of the course didn’t need any big encroachments into nature: There is a big artificial pond and some smartly placed bunkers and mounts, but all in all nature has given character to the fairways – a gentle up and down with small, but in no way hard Greens. The layout doesn’t just live on the gentle hillside, but from the doglegs (4 out of 9 holes), which emerged out of reasons of space. If long hitters perk up their ears now: yes, shortcuts are possible, but the back of the knees are far away from the tee. Just finished, Nixon is thinking already about an extension of the course (holes 2 and 3 from a Par 4 and 3 to a Par 5 and 4): Instead of Par 68 you will have Par 72 then.
