LIVED SOLIDARITY – In the middle of Waldviertel, to the north of Zwettel, golfers can riot on 27 holes. The clubs in this area work close together.

Waidhofen2
Let’s start with the changed economic background to the topic golf in Waidhofen. Since February 2006, the golf course (Owner up till then was the Waldviertler Sparkasse) and the Thayatal-Hotel (former owner was the Markus Fink GesmbH.) have a new owner, the ATGolf GesmbH. This company is to 100% daughter of the Czech investor group Exzellenc. Behind this group stand two Czech businessmen, who have, after the partial sell of one of their successfully reconstructed steel mill in Trinec, round about 30 million Euros in gambling money for golfing plans to their disposal. AT Chairman Roman Khaur talks about a plan of these investors, to buy and/or build between 10 to 15 golfing facilities in Czech Republic, Austria and southern Europe, mainly projects, which are cheap to get due to economic crisis. At the moment, Exzellenc owns a 9-hole-course in Pistec and bought land for a 18-hole-course in Usti (Aussig).

Good old times
And Excellenc is operating the golf course and golf hotel in Telc, close to the Austrian-Czech border. The vicinity to Waidhofen was a reason for this investment, Khaur explains, who himself is known within the Czech and Austrian golf scene: The Czech has planned and build the golf resort Monachus close to Haugschlag and he has worked as teaching-pro in the golf eldorado in the Buckligen Welt as well. Target is to create a symbiosis like in the former monarchy.  The golf course hotel in Telc, Siskuv Mlyn, is due to the seminar-offers very well booked, Khaur says: “Guests, who don’t get a free room anymore, can be booked in Waidhofen.” For the future they have also thought of boosting up the tournament and green fee tourism between the two locations by creating special offers. When there is one course occupied by a tournament, the members can switch and play on the other one. The green fees in Telc (25 and 30 Euro; for “heart of golf members” even half price) and the cheap bohemian gastronomy tempt to make the trip. The insiders’ tip from Khaur is the restaurant Na Kopecku, translated called upon the hill, in Telc, where you get full up for 3 Euro “and you even get a beer with it” Khaur vows.

Club in leather
Waidhofen, of course, still stays part of the marketing organisation “Heart of Golf “, following the golf experience Waldviertel. For existing golf club members nothing is changing with the take over. Or is it? Because of the changed Ownership much more can be invested into performance. For the first time, golfers can witness this as viewers, having the richest Alps-Tour-Event of the year from the 4th to the 7th of May in Waidhofen. Prize money: 56.000 Euro. After the event, members and green fee players experience actively the new quality and get redesigned club rooms within the next few weeks. Khaur: “One part of the former hotel restaurant is going to be adapted for about 80.000 Euro – for example with English upholstery, to revive the club life as quickly as possible.” In the medium term 4 bowling alleys and golf simulators will be built. On last mentioned, next winter the 1st Waldviertler-Indoor-Championships will be played.

Here & There
One more sentence to the golf course in Telc, which has been built in 2005: Back in those days, it has been a 9-hole-course, and will be extended this May by another 9 holes. The area didn’t have to be changed a lot and is perfect to play golf: gentle ups and downs with wide fairways and pleasing Greens. The other difficulties are not that bad at all, although there are some hard Par 4 alleys. The new club house is also furnished “English style”, so Roman Khaur, “because we inherited golf from the English.” This inner optic is furthermore a link to Waidhofen: In the club house over there you will soon be able to relax on creaking leather chairs and pillows.
