Easy to reach from Vienna’s citycenter and fast played – the GC Leopoldsdorf

…and within three hours, the sun will set. The Indians are always the good guys and also win in this situation. So, into the car, down southwards and 30 minutes later I meet up with Robert Bruckmayer, Assistant Pro of the golf academy of Head Pro Gary Felton, at the putting Green at GC Leopoldsdorf. Bevor we hit the round, we talk a little about the history of the course.
You feel instantly, that Bruckmayer, who has been working for years in the Pro shop, before his education as Pro, enjoys his working surroundings. And this is important – to him, to the club and also to this history, because it reflects the whole impression of a round of golf. “Let’s finish off here with a last putt towards the “alp” and then continue on the round” Bruckmayer challenges me.

Alps and piranhas
LeopoldsdorfNEU4The “alp” is the (named by a club member) elevated area to the left of the putting Green, which is definitely one of the biggest of its kind in Austria. The round of the 9-hole-facility is not really a challenge for long hitters (total of 3.754 to 4.290 metres), but just hitting the ball is not going to work here. Precision is necessary, because danger lurks permanently to the side and behind the Greens, where you find yourself either inside rough or in sandy or wet soil, after having missed the close up shot. From the front, the Greens seem hand-tame and provide beginners always with an open door, where no water hazards or bunkers distract the balls during descent or bouncing.
A real test of courage lies ahead of those, who hate water hazards, not until the seventh and eighth hole. Here, at the approach of the 7th Green respectively 8th tee, you have to surpass a frontal water hazard. Even though the course, due to its design, seems to be extremely beginner friendly, you should not get the impression, that it is easy to play for advanced or even Pros. “The permanent wind is always a problem at the approach”, Bruckmayer reports, “and when we let the rough between the lanes grow for 10 centimetres at the seniors championship, we had “very british” conditions – in contrast to the verbal excesses of those, who didn’t find their balls.”

After three comfortable lanes at the beginning we now arrive at the only Par 5, which, with 378/420 metres, is very short and rated as easiest hole of the course. “However, this hole is the most axed one in tournaments!” the Pro warns of too much aggressiveness. You need to keep it under control also at the next hole: The fifth Green is defended by a pond respective reed to the left and right and, with strong wind, you need to target up to 20/30 metres next to the Green. Not without reason, this 146/172 metres long Par 3 is rated the hardest hole on the course. Attention to those, who want to look for their balls inside the water hazard: “Piranhas!” Bruckmayer warns me, smirking, and points at numerous carp-gobs in the water.

Time is golf
Within just 3 hours I finished the round from the office via the Tangente, the parking space, the club office and the nine hole course to the club house. The short walking distances on the facility take care of a nice flow. “Twelve years ago, my aim was, to offer more golf in less time on nine holes close to the city, in order to perfectly use leisure time at a top cultivated course”, the owner of the course and president Nikolaus Dreihann-Holenia explains his dream of a golf course. The manager of the club, Mag. Ursula Peer, explains it internationally: A great place to play and to work”. Nobody is surprised, that everyone feels so well here – Piranhas and Pros.
