THE STORY OF GUTENHOF – Two equally fantastic golf courses, perfect infrastructure and lots of feelings – the facility in Himberg is a prime example of Austrian golf culture.

One of the shiniest clubs arround Vienna: the Colony Club features two strong parkland-courses and a luxurious club house.

One of the shiniest clubs arround Vienna: the Colony Club features two strong parkland-courses and a luxurious club house.

Coincident has a hard life at Colony Club Gutenhof in Himberg. It may show up now and then at the course, when, for example, the ball, hit with a slice by a number 7 iron, COINCIDENTLY bounces off the wooden bordering into the “Kalten Gang” (that’s the name of the ditch) at hole 2 of the western course, and sinks into the water there. Or an unlucky fellow at the 18th hole of the eastern course, who COINCIDENTLY hits a hanging branch of a tree and needs to look for his ball inside the forest. Apart from that, everything else was planned very accurately during the last couple of years. High level design was guaranteed for both 18-holes facilities by the duo Rossknecht & Erhardt – a lot of water, excellent bunkers, interesting Greens, varying fairways despite least exciting landscape. The club house, smiled at as southern mansion in the beginning, has exactly the right size for a club with far more than 1000 members.

Himberg_LayoutThe sportive value of the facility was embedded into the memory of national and international Green fee guests with high-class tournaments (Austrian Open Men and Women, Amateur National Championship and European Championship). And club manager Mag. Eva-Maria Höfer works on the social reputation with verve and enthusiasm. Of course it is a bonus, that Mrs. Höfer is, due to her circle of friends, part of the society herself, but don’t get me wrong: Himberg has never been a jet-set “wannabe” place, but has always been a club with Anglo-Saxon idols, which dedicates itself to cultural and charity golf events. That’s why we can expect something special for the 15th anniversary: At the 5th anniversary, gondolas were floating over the pond at the 18th hole (west) and at the 10th anniversary, Franco Andolfo (with Grandezza) and huge fireworks entertained the audience; so maybe Mrs. Höfer combines Franco and the gondolas this summer?

No, we are not going to tell, but you can be sure of a big summer party (without golf). Which news at Himberg can be expected by guests this season? Once again an even better course, which was enhanced over the winter months – at the western course, all bunkers have been renewed. The restaurant area was redesigned, with changed colouring – work of light designer Christian Ploderer – will even keep the biggest critics speechless. Then – a new golf academy, which was founded by the Colony Club Gutenhof together with the Englishman Gary Birch. This academy should work hand in hand with the Club Pros (Andy Hickman, Josef Ebner). Birch, playing professional himself from 1971 to 1985 and founding member of the European Tour in 1974, uses some special methods to erase bad golfing.

Autogenic training will play a big part in his coaching and there will be special trainings for golfer with a handicap below 12, being a bit more sportive. It sounds funny as well, that Birch – he calls his teaching method “definitive Golf” – is thinking of a success-guarantee: We will have a close look onto that and we will keep you informed. But not only these two ways of training should be an incentive of visiting Himberg this year: Like always, the tournaments in Himburg are top class, because they do not end at the 18th hole, but with the final glass of wine after the big gala buffet. The only disadvantage: Because of the fact that Himberg is due to its high number of members not a classical Green fee club, tournaments are already booked out weeks in advance.
