INGENIOUS – It is a nice and exciting story, how today’s golf resort Haugschlag could establish golf in Waldviertel.

It all started with the hotel village Königsleitn in Litschau. Back then, Hermann Holbach was the commercial project manager for Robert Rogner. “We were looking for specials next to the already given amenities, which can be done everywhere in the world, like walking, splashing inside the Herrensee or biking – and that’s how we found golf. We also had in the back of our minds to extend season for the hotel village”, Holbach remembers, who got the golf projects straight away. The manager new golf at that time just as a car-brand, but he knew Hans Geist (marketing boss of Steyr-Fiat), who himself brought his acquaintance Wolfgang Paul (president of the golf course, founded in 1970, in Föhrenwald) to the Waldviertel.

HaugschlagNEU4Paul let his brother in law fly in from Ireland and soon after, first drafts of the golf course were drawn. “We invited trendsetters of the region to so-called golf-cocktails, went from village to village and after 2 months we already had 120 members from this area”, Holbach says. And as visionary as the people of the Waldviertel always were, they were thinking back then already about holding the Austrian Open Golf Tournament and the possibility of the extension of the course. As special attraction for beginners the pitch & putt course directly in the village of Litschau was built in 1989 – a beginner’s course with eighteen Par 3 holes. The upgrade to the resort took place in 1999 with a second course (“Haugschlag”), a hotel and a golf academy. This was a daring step and so the new golf club was founded as a separate club. After the successful start of the project, both courses were merged together under the trademark Golf resort Haugschlag 2001.

Two golf pearls
haugschlag-luftaufnahmeThe older course “Waldviertel”, three times location for the “Austrian Open” (1994, 1995, 1996) is a real challenge from the white tees (6.262 metres). But we don’t really have to copy the champions and enjoy the same beautiful view from the red and yellow tees and have more fun on top. This course lies so heartbreakingly beautiful within the landscape, that the long journey to the Waldviertel is forgotten after the first few swings. Holiday starts with the sight of hilly lanes, ponds, birches and logans. The course “Haugschlag” bears the hallmarks of the designer Max Lamberg: a sparks spraying driver and solid short-play (Haugschlag has even more exciting Greens than Waldviertel) whet the appetite for attacking well defended holes. But the course is also fair to those with higher handicap: hard Par, easy bogey – that is the motto of design from Lamberg. The final hole, a 100/114 metres short Par 3 with island Green, lies directly in front of the hotel and club house terrace, the dramatic climax and the “picture hole” of the golf resort. So please smile, even when you hit into the water hazard.

Small, fine celebration
Foundation members from 1987 to 1989 and merited VIPs were invited to a small celebration. “We want to honour those of the region, who supported the project back then, when it was just written on paper”, Holbach says, who doesn’t think of a big birthday do. “The membership fee of 1.160 Euro for 2 courses including Litschau and sauna is a permanent occasion anyway!” – Really a present for all golfers.
