PEAR BLOSSOMS – When the weekend comes closer, the Viennese and people of Linz are looking for a course within short distance, only one hour away from the city border.

Golf under the trees – the hilly layout offers remarkable views over the Mostviertel

Golf under the trees – the hilly layout offers remarkable views over the Mostviertel

And because you don’t want to waste your petrol on an uneconomic round of golf, you might plan as such: warm up on Saturday, a tournament on Sunday – a good chance to pimp up your handicap. And in between you book a nice room, not too posh but down to earth, how they call it.

If your choice falls on the GC Swarco Amstetten-Ferschnitz, it will not be one of the worst. Distance is ok, the down-to-earth surrounding in the lower Austrian alps (has definitely the right to be called Mostviertel) as well, and you can easily survive two days playing golf at GC Ferschnitz (even longer: the green fee weekly price is just a refreshing 200 Euro). GC Swarco (Manfred Swarovski, a very dear friend of the club, pays a lot for this abbreviation, which affects the budget positively) started off with 9 golf lanes 17 years ago, which lay on a slope behind the club house. It was a bit tight back then (the fairways were back to back), a bit simple (flat Greens, small bunkers) and the driving range as well was a compromise with obvious expire date. Then, the club employed the pupil of Jack Nicklaus, Francois Bouchard and ordered him to double the course. The result is praised convincingly by club president Josef Schimanko: “Bouchard adjusted it the new lanes in a lovely manner, without digging up everything.”

Near the ground
Nature didn’t make it too hard for Monsieur Bouchard: Many of the newly rent areas – the pastor’s meadow with the 4th green and the 5th tee for example – have a distinctive character already, which affects the strategy too: Whoever can set the ball well, can enjoy the round more.

Newly shuffled
Bouchard has consequently thinned the already existing fairways as well (there is just 6 lanes on that area now), built up the old tees and designed the biotope more prominent. Only at the Greens you can imagine where old ends and new begins. The Greens planted by Bouchard now offer more possibilities to miss a putt due to the number of breaks. The reconstruction was done in little steps out of financial reasons, president Schimanko tells. But it was good that way, which was proven by the reaction of members and green fee guests. The feedback is so positive as well, because the Mostviertler cultural landscape with its fruit trees, acres and forest corners helps to realise the stress free ambience.
Especially now in spring time, when the pear trees start to blossom and make appetite for the autumn cider. In regards to the earlier mentioned lodging houses: The club advises its guests on its homepage (by the way very well designed) to book the nearby land hotel Gafringwirt (in Euratsfeld), the hotel Exel Amstetten, the hotel Post in Melk and the relax resort hotel Kothmühle in Neuhofen/Ybbs, all of them seem to be a kind of foundation hotels.
