302 GC Föhrenwald [0]

THE RAINBOWMAN – You cannot believe what we were told in regards to rich fairways and Greens during the last few years. On this dry soil? Never-ever!

Home of austria LET tournament: the GC Föhrenwald transformed from a classic Layout to a big designer course.

Home of austria LET tournament: the GC Föhrenwald transformed from a classic Layout to a big designer course.

And then this appearance! GC Föhrenwald Wr. Neustadt not only convinced with its organisation during the “Siemens Austrian Ladies Open”, but also with the course itself. This is why club members start to cheer and applaud towards the green keeping team around Wayne Beasley: He wants to keep up with the high standards also during future daily business.

Up and Down
Foehrenwald_PlatzskizzeEven before hitting the first ball, they draw already all attention to themselves: these sweet animals, emerging out of countless holes running over fairways and through bunkers just to disappear again in the next hole. That these ground squirrels at Föhrenwald remind of the head greenkeeper’s last name doesn’t make Beasley any happier. These protected animals are a real plague in his eyes. “I need one man a day, to remove all the stones and earthy heaps out of the bunkers and fairways so the caring equipment doesn’t take any damage”, the born Englishman, who works at Föhrenwald since 2004, explains. And this course has 73(!) bunkers, which they love to use as entrance to their burrows. But this is by far not the biggest challenge of all caring measurements.

Rain via Mobile
The soil of the course is like a sieve because of the hardness of its subsurface. Any water just dries in and seeps away into the surface. Out of this reason architect Jeff Howes (responsible as well for Adamstal and the reconstruction of Murtal) installed together with the GC Föhrenwald a watering system during complete renovation from 2001 to 2003. Not less than 500 sprinklers (4 piece per Green) sprinkle about 1.500 m³ water per day. In order to have fun as well, these sprinklers can be managed by mobile phone. So don’t be surprised, when the water starts to sprinkle, just at the moment, you enter the Green. Maybe you played too slowly or you didn’t replace the divot! But there is a big advantage to this special profile of the soil: While you sink in mud after long heavy rain on other courses, here you can easily play after a short amount of time. Beasley and his team of nine green keepers contributed a lot that this facility became an oasis of peace and comfort in this natural area. So make sure you finish your food at the restaurant (which isn’t a hard thing to do), so the weather stays nice – rain comes anyway – by mobile phone.
