206 GC Klagenfurt-Seltenheim [0]

THE CONDEMNED LIVE LONGER – What lasts long, gets finally well. GC Klagenfurt Seltenheim may definitely fix this saying on its chest.

Fast greens, gently rolling fairways and giant peaks at a safe distance – that’s what distinguishes Seltenheim.

After some financial turbulences in the beginnings of the club – long time the club house on top, beside the romantic course, was a workaround, before the new splendour piece was opened in July, 1999 – now it was time for the next step to place: The 18-hole arrangement, as far as design (Perry Dye, the son of big Pete Dye) is concerned is already worth for championship, now should also correspond to this standard in regards to cultivating it. That is why the Carinthian cultivating company JTS was taken on board – Dietmar Sabin und Otmar Jäger – to eradicate the last deficiencies. Firstly, the company JTS had to take care of all the Greens, especially Greens number 3, 4 and 5, which needed intensive attention. On top of the existing problems on these greens was the fact that a mad motorcyclist had traversed the fourth green in a night’s trip and damaged it badly. However, the coarsest defects are removed and meanwhile only real experts recognise the difference between the newly constructed ones and the remaining Greens

Dye-Design & Hauser-Kurs
With all the hype around even larger and longer golf courses. GC Klagenfurt-Seltenheim also often forgets, that golfers, who only want to play golf amongst their friends without stress, take the opportunity of sidestepping to this romantic 9-hole-course. The Romantic-Course, designed as an ecological golf course by the Hauser brothers, is also cultivated very well and always offers shady places throughout summertime. The course lies all the way in a forest and leads all the way around  the castle of Seltenheim. A funny spot is definitely the tee on number 9, the so called “three-castle-tee”. Like out of an aerie the ball rushes from a height of 50 metres downwards, after having enjoyed the magnificent view including the three castles. You should also allow yourself time to watch and take a deep breath, because the rise is even hard for trained calves. However, this 9-hole course is an excellent alternative to be reconciled once again with your ramshackle short play.

Back to the „big“ course: Who has already once played in Seltenheim, knows, that this course can, according to tee, be played from tenaciously to consumer-friendly. The back tees are recommended only for good golfers who also know how to set the ball correctly. You can only play hole 14, a nasty Par 5 (maximum 487 metres), which landing zone is surrounded by water, successfully, if you know how to hit a controlled fade and if you let the ball glide smoothly through the trees into the direction of the Fairway. Water is generally the dominant factor throughout the whole course: There is no single hole, where you are not confronted with it in any form. The Signature Hole in Seltenheim is hole 8: The smart, however, not too long Par 3 (110/131 metres) is totally surrounded by water. Not only for champions.

The separation of the Fairways was solved very nicely in regards to design by Perry Dye. Hills were piled up for miles, which give the course a clear “left-character”. This idea is still optically underlined by the high rough on the hills. This fact is no joy to golfers, because these roughs often refuse to give back a ball, once played in there. But this also counts to the signs of a real championship course, which recompenses good and risky hits but punishes risky and less clean hits immediately.

By the way, the fact, that this course is ready for higher duties for a long time, is proven by many high-class tournaments, which have been located there in the meantime: One of them is the Matchplay Masters as well as the final tournament of the Telekom Tour, which will this year again take place here in Steltenheim in the beginning of October.
