205 GC Klopeinersee [0]

THE COLLECTION KLOPEIN – The idea is obvious: a golf course as exhibition area. A bit strange though, that this idea was put into place by a medical doctor.

The 18-hole panorama course merged itself to one of the most interesting tests in Austria.

From Golfrevue 2/2003

Dr. Alfred Celedin, radiologist in Völkermarkt and, of course, golfer (handicap 10) is that person behind the project of GC Klopeiner See, which was realised in 2004. Celedin joined a sculptor-symposium in Maria Saal, north of Klagenfurt, thanks to a friend of his, and convinced the artists there, to create some sculptors for a golf course. “Against the wishes of the club”, Celedin remembers.  “We first had to find some sponsors to be allowed to put the sculptures in place there. Although this unique project is not only a successful PR move within Austria, it is also a benefit to the club itself. At the end of the day, with help from the bank of Hypo Alpe Adria and Schöller, this project was set up pretty well.” Celedin even invited the artists from Austria and Italy to Klopeiner See and showed the golf course to them, in order to inspire them. The results of this work are 18 extremely different sculptures, which now decorate this golf course of Klopeiner See.

One artist, already well known amongst the carinthian golfers, is Bernhard Mikel. This Carinthian donated already many of his paintings as trophy for golf tournaments. Now, finally, he got his place at hole 11. “Golfcube” is the name of his sculpture, which should be a synonym of the lucky component within the game of golf. Responsible for the “Golfball” at the 9th tee, is Ursula Beiler. This piece of art resembles the thorny way, which has to be taken by every golfer: A huge golf ball, where randomly set oversized thorns emerge.

The Monster lurks at the Tee
Very interesting as well is “Monster of the Turner See” at the 5th tee, carved by the Italian Benedetto Morasutti, or “Joy of life with optimism” (Harry Raab) at the 6th tee. This sculpture shows a couple watching the drive of golfers over their shoulders. As a formality and to give you a chance to show your intellectual knowledge at your next round in Klopein, we tell you the name of the rest of the sculptures:  Separation (Hole 2, Rudolf Pinter), Afrodite (Hole 3, Roberto Merotto), Angel (Hole 4, Manfred Lang-Kropfitsch), Port of Hope (Hole 7, Harry Raab), The boat is full (Hole 8, Johann Plank), Dream of a golfer (Hole 10, Flavio da Rold), King (Hole 14, Kurt Spitaler), Udder (Hole 15, Peppo Pichler) and Temptation (Hole 18, Armin Spitzer).

“We want, that art goes to the golfers. Not every golfer has just eyes for the course – there is no harm done showing a little bit of culture”, Alfred Celedin explains the meaning of the staging, who loves to join art- and golftours himself. “It is such a good combination to play golf and enjoy culture for a day”, the radiologist says, whose favourite country of holidays is France. Regarding the artists, Celedin hopes, that at least one or the other sculpture will be sold. The clients are perfect for this cause, so the medical doctor, who sees himself more a initiator rather than a curator. And if there is really no chance of selling these pieces of art, which decorate the course of Klopein since last year, then Celedin thinks of making a charity event. However, the next step as far as “Collection Klopein” is concerned, is already in planning: At the next “Art & Golf Tournament” the sculptors will exhibit small sculptures, which will find their place inside the club house.
