204 GC Velden [0]

FOLLOW THE TRACE OF A MYTH – One who seeks tranquility, panoramic views and a very well maintained course finds this at Velden / Köstenberg, Member of the elite „Leading courses in Austria“.

From Golfrevue 3/2007

These 18 holes in Velden are known as the most difficult in Carinthia. The new manager Roland Sint wants to put an end to this myth. „In our last tournament 50 percent of the participants played her handicap, or could underplay themselves“. This is hard to deny, especially, when you still remember your own experience in terms of many unsuccessful tournaments. But your problem probably lies in own game. How else is it possible, that so many players could improve their handicap here?

Already on the first hole, a 455-m-long Par 5, the third blow (forest to the left, narrow Fairway, water to the right, bunkers, deep rough) onto the long pulled Green requires exact precision. The crimped Green demands exact reading of the Putting line and a sensitive feeling for speed. Hole 2 (par 4) is short, however, the green is more than treacherous. Next is a downhill Par 3 where it is hard, to hold the ball on the Green. On the next Par 4, a long drive is necessary to reach the big hanging Green within two hits. At hole number 5, handicap 1, Par 5, everything must be perfect, to score the Par. Not really that bad, is it? Let’s continue:  Neglect the biotope at hole 6, hence, the drive is no problem; the rest feasible. You can reach the highly recumbent hole seven in two blows – but three to four attempts is no rarity as well. What follows is a small relaxation, the view of the marvellous world of mountains and a short Par 3 only demands a middle iron to reach the Green. The ninth hole requires once again more attention, otherwise the ball will disappear quickly into the bushes to the right after the drive.

How it all began
The golf club was founded in 1987. A year later, in 1988, the construction of the 18 holes has begun. The first years did not meet the expectations, only when Manfred Neumayer was engaged as a manager in 1994, things start to go up. „Manfred has massively built on quality and under his assistance the “Golfland Kärnten” was founded“, Sint praises his predecessor. The club went through a heavy phase three years ago, when 90 members changed to the newly founded GC Finkenstein. „We could almost compensate for this departure“, Sint says relieved.

With special offers and even more quality, which is almost impossible, the new Chairman wants to lure more members and Greenfee-Players to Köstenberg:” We will interact more with local primary schools from Velden and Köstenberg”. Secondly, the manager wants to bring more young people between the age of 20 to 30 to the sport of golf and offer special family packages.

There is a name to Quality
For many years, Head Greenkeeper Othmar Jäger shows responsible for the quality of the course. A man, who works meticulously and has tested countless types of gras and only uses the best for his course. The only thing that really worries Jäger is the water situation. „At the moment the water management is the most difficult on the course. I must improvise a lot, one employee alone is just responsible for the water household. At very dry places he needs to do it manually“, the passionate Greenkeeper tells, who doesn’t let the situation of the water go. Hunter wants to have a subterranean water reservoir. „10,000 cubic metres would be optimum. I use that when all the other resources are used up“, according to Jäger. The problem: This investment devours between 500,000 and 800,000 Euros.

Finally, we wanted to establish the secret of Velden from Roland Sint: “All you need is a well planned course management and tactics – then, there should not be a problem.” he knowingly grins. And what else is there to do, than believe in him.
